About
Gap Town Hall
As far back as the 9th century, the center of municipal life in Gap was located around the Place Saint Etienne, today's Place Jean Marcellin. On the site of today's Hôtel de Ville, on rue Colonel Roux, was the former maison communale, built in 1400 for Gap's burghers to store and equip themselves with weapons and defensive equipment to protect the town. Even then, the house was topped by a belfry.
