Since the laws of decentralization, the Archives départementales have been a service of the Département. They are responsible for collecting, classifying, preserving and communicating archives relating to the Hautes-Alpes, from a wide variety of dates and origins.

Headed by a State Curator, the Archives are responsible for collecting the public and private archives that will enable us to write the history of the Hautes-Alpes, preserving the mass of documents thus collected (almost 11 km linear) and protecting them from any deterioration, classifying archive collections according to a professional method to enable all citizens to find the information they are looking for, and communicating documents in the reading room or on our website, as well as through exhibitions, conferences, publications and electronic content.
